The various forms of chromatography (gas, liquid, thin layer) allow separation and/or measurement of one or more compounds. A chromatographic system consists of a mobile and a stationary phase in a support medium. A compound which shows little interaction with the stationary phase moves through the system more rapidly than another compound showing more interaction with the stationary phase. A detector measures the amount of material in the outflow from the system over time, each compound ideally forming a symmetrical peak separated from the peaks of other compounds in the injection material.
