The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) identified a number of conditions that can cause an acute decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in a patient with chronic renal failure. The occurrence of one or more of these conditions should alert the clinician to the need for closer monitoring and more aggressive management to reverse the decline.
